Qatar Airways will add two destinations to its Indian service before the end of this year, giving India the most destinations of any country served by the airline. On September 23 the airline will begin twice-weekly service to Nagpur, in the central Indian state of Maharashtra, followed by the launch of daily service to the west Indian city of Ahmedabad, in Gujarat state, on December 12.
The new routes will use Airbus A320 aircraft configured with twelve business and 132 economy class seats. With the added destinations, Qatar will serve eight cities in India with 51 flights per week. The airline currently has seven flights per week to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Cochin, Trivandrum and Hyderabad.
As India’s economy continues to grow and Qatar Airways continues its expansion efforts, air routes between the two countries become more important. Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker praised the opening up of India’s aviation industry to allow increased domestic and international competition.
No other full service scheduled international airline flies to Nagpur, one of the India’s inland container port hubs. The city of two million lies in a farming area known for its oranges and is being regarded by international companies as India’s next technological center. The city is planning a new airport and economic zone.
Ahmedabad was known as the “Manchester of the East” because of its textile industry and was a leader in the Indian independence movement. The city is a large industrial center and functions as the commercial and cultural capital of Gujarat.
